Bare Bones Biology 267 – Meditation in Purple and Gold

Our emerging world view system, generated at the women’s leadership retreat, is composed of twenty-plus women. On last Saturday, we separated (at least physically). The eldest (I like my new identity) and the amazingly fluent youngest drove together to Angel Fire, where we picked up Bitsy, who was in deep mourning and nearly broke what was left of my heart, and then we proceeded down the Canyon to Taos and the Snow Mansion, where we delivered the youngest with some considerable confusion. By the time that adventure climaxed, the sun was lowering toward the far side of the next mountain, but enough light remained for a couple of hours driving through the beautiful “Kingdom*” of LIFE over the mountain to home.

Our little Saturn eased past the town limits just as the “add water” image started flashing on the dashboard, and when at last we reached our doorstep we found there a celebratory bottle of home-made wine.

So that was nice.

The CWL did change my personal self-image system; it will take some time to see how that falls out. But I alreOcamora-ASC_8421RLSsady knew how to write my life goal, which is: “to help grow a sustainable, resilient new human social system (world view) within a healthy Biosystem.” But last week, I only mentioned the next step on that path, which is the completion and distribution of “Book 25.” It seemed more solid; more conceivable; easier to discuss a smaller goal. Both were re-affirmed. And I got to express my deepest sorrow that is the reason for my persistent dedication. That is, watching the young of the corposystem working so very hard in their efforts to save the Kingdom of LIFE, not realizing that what they are doing — not their intention – their actions are powered by the needs of the corposystem ethic, and the corposystem ethic is the root cause of all the major problems we all are trying to fix.

Growth by domination for money. That’s the corposystem world view (emergent characteristic) in a nutshell. It’s not what we meant to do, but it’s what it is. The Biosystem world view is LIFE. More about that next week.

So, we made it home before dark, parked the Saturn, poured the wine, thank you Diego, sat down at the computer, and collided head on with the corposystem world view, in the guise of a large and well respected nonprofit organization.

I have spent the past fifteen years, after I finally realized I can’t change anyone else without doing unethical behaviors, trying to define myself (the system that is me) so as to align my own world view and behaviors with the needs of the Biosystem. As opposed to the system in which most of us today were raised and trained, which is the corposystem.

I had offered to donate about a $1500 value of photography to this nonprofit, and last March they claimed to be enthusiastic, but today — well never mind, I only have five minutes here, but from long experience I know it when I see it. Back in the day we had a name for it — MCP, today some people refer to it as male dominance behavior, but in fact I have done quite a lot of personal research and changed my own label from MCP to CCP, representing corposystem domination, because it turns out females who are raised in the same system are most often just as bad (or worse if they are highly competent), given the chance, and it is really the corposystem ethic itself that is the cause of the problem(s) that we struggle to contain.

Ocamora-ASC_8728RLSs

Growth by domination for money.

So – what can we do about this? Not much. What I did was remind myself that I should not be donating time or money or my skills to help support an organization that has values that are destroying my own commitment to LIFE, so I will stay home and work on Book 25.

And then I thought maybe – if we can understand the goals and the roadblocks – our emerging CWL system might turn out to be the difference between growth/domination /money and sustainability/resilience/compassion for LIFE.

Bare Bones Biology 252 – Ask the Right Question-repost

It is important to keep track of WHY we want this or that result from our activism. Do we simply want someone to fight with? To be better than? Do we want to be famous or well respected? Or rich? Or possibly do we really care to improve the future health of our communities and our country and the Biosystem in which we live?

War may create wealth, but not health. The health of our communities cannot be improved when we all function in the state of war that we call politics. On the other hand, we do need to protect ourselves from the politicians and their wars, and we would rather do it without generating a real revolution.

At the same time, our political war is not responding to we the people, except in clever ways to divert our attention away from the real problems. Thus we do not feel listened to (because we are not listened to). We are being manipulated with what are called “displacement activities.” The politicians are giving us something to fight about – the wrong questions – so we won’t bother them with the right questions.

Why are these the wrong questions? Because the answers to their questions cannot improve the future health of our communities and our country and the Biosystem in which we live. Rather than working to improve the health of our communities, we spend our time frantically responding to questions that make the future more unhealthy rather than more healthy.

But what can we do? We are in self-defense mode! Self defense against our own corposystem! We can’t just let the politics do whatever it will do, because we know what it will do. The corposystem exists to make money from growth, and so that is what it will do. Meantime, politicos need to prevent us from recognizing their game, and a major way they do this is to ask the wrong questions.

When the corposystem wants to prevent us from thinking about improving the future health of our communities and our country and the Biosystem in which we live, what does it do?   It gives us two wrong questions to argue about. For example. should the fracking wells be 50 feet or 500 feet away from the nearest residence? It’s clearly the wrong question, because the answer has little or nothing to do with the long-term over-all health of our communities. We are required to vote on two wrong questions. The right question is: Why do we need more fracking wells?

150506-Witting-ASC_6705RLs copyClearly, we are being victimized by our own system. So what can we do? For example, how do we protect ourselves from the fracking scam. By voting, right? Not voting won’t help.

I suggest we make it clear that we understand what’s going on by ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTION, or answer the right question, instead of (or in addition to) choosing between two wrong questions. When they ask us whether the fracking should be 50 feet away from residences or 500 feet away from residences, we pour into their meeting places and ask (don’t tell, ask) WHY/ REALLY WHY do we need more fracking? And publish the answers. Or the non-answers. The real answer will become apparent if you watch what they DO. For example, burning off a large portion of the gas because it’s cheaper for them than not burning. They make more profit at the expense of a healthy system. What they really want is money. For themselves. Not health.

So before you write to your congresspersons, talk among yourselves and figure out what really is the RIGHT question, and then, when you do write, answer whatever wrong question they have made up and then ALSO ask the right question. They probably never thought of it, and wouldn’t it be fun to educate the congresspersons about how to be good at their jobs. And if they are not good at their jobs, make that fact embarrassingly obvious without starting just one more useless fight.

As I was writing the above, this below appeared on the web:

“According to this Texas Tribune article, a revised version of HB40 is now before the full House. The updated version does not seem to be on the legislature’s web site. The article says that the bill is better, but it is still a threat to citizens’ ability to protect their environment.”

They aren’t even trying to be subtle anymore.  It’s become the status quo.  Two wrong questions. Every time. Pick one, either one. We lose, they win.

The Law of Life is how the living Earth stays balanced by balancing all of its parts.  How the Law of Life functions is deeper than any of the simple answers that are argued on the internet, but it is not a mystery and has been understood for most of my lifetime at least. If anything changes the interactions that Life of the Biosystem uses to stay alive (that’s all the processes) — then the Biosystem will change — in order to stay alive. Right now we refer to this as climate change, or some people call it evolution.

The balance of Life requires both the up-side and the down-side, we must honor them both in the sense of recognizing they are what maintains life, and try to help keep them in a viable balance by not unbalancing the system at either end.

Populations are not the only factors in this balance, but over-population is an excellent example of how it works.

Suffering, in today’s over-populated system is caused by producing more humans than there is enough food to feed them. This unbalances all the Earth subsystems that are related to food, and food is the energy source for Life. The deniers will tell you there is plenty. That hoary old claim was outdated nearly 40 years ago, and we exceeded the carrying capacity before the turn of the century. The carrying capacity is the amount of food we can take from the Biosystem without unbalancing the system.

We humans will do everything we can to save other living humans (this is a human instinct and, in humanity, we do need to honor our instincts that make us human). World Health Organization, for our population example, has made an immense contribution in this direction, probably saving more humans than any other organization in human history. This is the up-side of our current human culture.

But everything on earth has a down-side as well as an up-side, and there is a down-side to over-population that we refuse to see. The problem is that if we can’t see it, then we can’t help the suffering. So now we have too many people for the amount of food; actually well past that — scrabbling around to take food energy sources away from other species to use for ourselves makes more unbalance. And so, the up-side of WHO is the wonderful, conscientious, caring contribution it has made to human wellness. The down-side is the awful calamity of starvation and disease and war that will be, and already are, the result of trying to save every human.

The LIVING EARTH SYSTEM is designed to stay balanced. And if God made it that way at the Creation, whenever that was, then God will not (and cannot) change it. Because if it changed from what it is, Earth System – and we are part of the Earth System – then the whole system would die or change into something else that we are not part of.

The only solution for overpopulation is to stop making so many babies. We have known this for at least a couple of hundred years, and about 50 years ago we rejoiced when the technology became available – but who is there to accept the responsibility?

While we older folk demand that every unborn human zygote must survive, even the unwanted ones, we have handed off to the youth of today our responsibility to deal with reality by helping compassionately to reduce the world population of humans so that those born in the future can come into a better world with less suffering. I don’t mean a better world than we are living now in Texas or Canada or England. I mean a better world for most of the rest of the humans now and in the future.

The end of our time is most likely to come through disease. Or it could be war, or it could even be starvation. Those are the likely scenarios. All of them are unavoidable during overpopulation — and unnecessary in normal balance.

The living Earth (of which we are a part) was created so that it could balance itself, and we humans cannot stop it from doing so. Certainly not by working harder and harder to further unbalance it.

So — you young folk will get to try, and likely you will fail because we aren’t much help to you. But now is your time to STOP looking for solutions OUTSIDE the reality of the Law of Life.

Because we live inside — and so does the solution.

Bare Bones Biology 266F – Holons, Levels, Systems, Emergent Properties

It’s the words that push us apart. There are a lot more words than there are important ideas. Listen to the ideas.

“Following Arthur Koestler and Ken Wilber, I use the term holon to refer to the nested nature of the universe. A holon is a whole that is also part of a larger whole and is itself composed of smaller wholes. Everything is part of something bigger and is made of smaller components nested within it. Each of those wholes/parts, or holons is creative. So the Universe is made of creative holons.”    Micheal Dowd, Thank God for Evolution.

I have talked about this very important idea more times, in my 266 blogs, than any other idea or fact. I have never used the term holon, because it is a new term coined to represent a reality that humans have known from nearly our beginning. It doesn’t matter what words we used, so long as we can understand each oher. The Reality is what it is, and anyone can understand it who cares to.

150626-canyon-ASC_7565RLSs copy The following is more like what I have been saying. A holon is a whole system that is part of a larger whole system and is itself composed of smaller whole systems. Every kind of holon is a unit that has unique “emergent properties,” that is, it creates its emergent “phenotype” or emergent properties by means of the laws of nature, or what I have referred to as the “Law of Life.” So, the universe is made of and generated by creative, naturally evolved systems in response to the most basic natural law that we know about. More basic, I believe, than the recently confirmed Higgs-Boson because what I have been referring to as the “Law of Life” is not imaginable as a THING, but is THE creative process, of which we are a part. So the universe is made of creative holons/evolved systems. No disagreement there, just different words.

On the other hand, if you think deeply about your own world view in relation to the above, you will probably find that the basic flaw in your world view (don’t fuss, everyone has basic flaws in their world views) is your imprinted belief that natural systems, processes and values are linear. This belief is as false as the older belief in a flat earth around which the sun orbits, and for similar reasons. It is homocentric and linear. The universe is not.

If we want to survive in this whole universe system that is composed of interconnected subsystems, we must change our own thinking to conform with the reality of the cosmos, because there is no way that we can continue to defeat or defy the power of the cosmos as we have been trying to do, for the last couple of millennia.

The universe is NOT a m150704-train-ASC_7962RLSsachine that we can control. It is a creative principle that we try to describe by defining the laws of nature.

Here’s another one.

What is a black hole? Astronomically? I do not know, and I hope the answer is not relevant to our survival, but I do know a different idea that is attached to that phrase that is relevant.

Many recognize the experience and Joseph Campbell reported it as part of a Native American growing-up ceremony for young men. Those of you who have stood on the edge of your own “black hole” will recognize it, and those who have not – you had to be there.   You have a choice, when you get to the black hole. You can let go and jump right into that black hole of fear. Fear of the reality of life that is not at all what you were taught; fear of the future that is not at all what you had planned. The other option is to turn back — to cling to the comfort and safety of the world view that was your birthrite.

The psychological black hole is the place of growing up within a new creation – a new and more realistic world view. Not that “aha” moment when everything comes together to make sense, but the eventual realization that we are not the everything that makes sense, nor can we control it. It is the time when we choose to let go our efforts to control that which is not really under our control and recognize that we are part of a whole – a holon with unique emergent properties that the living Earth can discard at any time these properties become a threat to its own holistic self. It’s a time of fear, but it could be the time when we reach out and touch the face of our Creator and begin to live within a true faith grounded in the wisdom of reality.

Homo sapiens teeters today at the brink of the black hole. The only control we have over the future is the choice that we make right now.

Bare Bones Biology 265 – Genetics for Everyday

Recently, Jill Witting showed me her backyard poultry project. We talked about the difference between Hybrid corn, hybrid chickens, cloned animals and GMO (genetically modified organisms).

Cloning is the process of making offspring that are genetically the same as their parent by taking one or more cells (or one nucleus that contains the parental genes) and growing that cell/nucleus into a new plant or animal. Cloning has been done with livestock and plants. With most plants cloning is relatively easy and is referred to as taking a cutting.

Hybrid corn is made by creating inbred lines and crossing them together to generate hybrids. If the two parental lines are well chosen, the resulting hybrid is more vigorous and productive than either parent and at the same time all the offspring are uniformly productive.

150630-Wittig-ASC_7827RLSsGenetically modified organisms have been changed so that the DNA in the chromosomes includes genes that are not normally found in those species. It is not yet known for certain whether these genes are harmful to humans, but it is clear that the process of raising GMO foods is extremely harmful to the soil and to the air and to the water of the commons, and in other ways harmful to the Biosystem itself, as was predicted and clearly described by Dr. Martha Crouch in her landmark paper that you can download from my web site.

So who cares about these technologies? And how should we react to them? That’s what Jill and I were talking about.

<aLL”What’s the point? You can buy chicken in the store as cheap as almost anything.”

JW “And it’s all fed corn, and corn in this country is hard to find that is not genetically modified. And I’m trying to limit my children’s exposure to GMO.”

LL “GMO corn.

JW “The goal. This is a trial run. I started with twelve, and lost two babies. My goal is to have enough for my family and to trade.”

LL “Trade for what?”

JW “That’s the spice of Life! There’s all kinds of things to trade. I want to be a part of the community, and having something to trade is a great way to get to know people.”

LL “It sure is.”

JW “And if not, we can definitely consume all these. I can make sixteen servings, four meals, out of just one bird. So there’s a lot of meat to get from that one animal, plus it’s a way to get my children to consume vegetables in a broth, and I find it’s a very healthy protein option, plus. We have one cow a year, now the chickens, and I would love to get some locally raised pork and/or lamb. I would love to have a little bit of both in my freezer, now I just have a lot of beef.”

150630-Wittig-ASC_7823RLSs LL “I quit eating meat, for the most part, when they started injecting hormones into it, which I think is probably worse than GMO, but we don’t know yet how GMO will turn out.”

JW “Well find out, won’t we, and unfortunately my children are the generation – – -“

LL “They won’t find out on your children – good for you.”

JW “And, I feel like, as with anything in life, it’s about balance, so if you aren’t consuming all your meat, all your milk, all your water full of hormones, and you’re limiting it where you can – –

LL “You can’t limit it 100%.”

JW “The stress of trying to limit it 100% I think would kill you just as fast as – – -“
